In addition to the core curriculum, students at St. Joseph’s School enjoy a variety of specialty subjects designed to complement and enrich their overall academic experience.
All students at St. Joseph’s School receive weekly instruction in Spanish. The Spanish curriculum is implemented using age appropriate activities in a creative, interesting and engaging classroom environment.
The level and intensity of Spanish instruction increases in Middle School. Our 6-8 graders visit the Spanish classroom twice per week, and have longer class periods than the elementary students. Many of our Middle School students are able to move on to advanced levels of Spanish in high school.
The purpose of the 6-8 Spanish program is:
Education in the visual arts is important to the development of creative expression. Through the study of visual arts, students develop creativity and build self-confidence. At St. Joseph’s School, our visual arts curriculum provides students with aesthetic experiences and builds an understanding of and an appreciation for a variety of cultures.
Middle School art classes meet twice a week. Students are instructed in drawing, painting, clay work, and other methods and media. Through the study of visual arts, students learn techniques and skills that encourage expression and a deep appreciation in the beauty of creation.
Music education is an essential component of a student’s education. Through music, students develop creativity, imagination and expression. The music curriculum at St. Joe’s introduces students to a broad cultural awareness and deeper appreciation of the arts while developing life-long skills.
Options for Middle School students include:
Choir
In Middle School Choir the emphasis is on the development of the singing voice. By singing choral part music, the students become independent singers with good posture and strong breath control.
Band
Visit the St. Joseph's School band page for more information.
Our physical education and health program is designed to develop the necessary skills and experiences that benefit students physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually. By fostering physical fitness, teamwork, and healthy lifestyle choices, students establish a positive self-concept.
Middle School students concentrate their efforts on mastering skills in a variety of team and individual activities, while learning about the importance of lifelong fitness and the multitude of activities that can keep one active. Middle School students may also have the opportunity to experience current exercise trends. Students will exhibit skills which will lead to the improvement or maintenance of total physical fitness in a safe and cooperative environment. Students will also participate in a physical fitness testing program, concentrating on the improvement of overall fitness.
